Since 1994, Bangkelian has grown from a restored pier warehouse with sixteen blackjack tables into Queensland's premier coastal casino resort — a place that could exist nowhere else.

From kelp cove to coastal casino resort
Bangkelian takes its name from the headland's original fishing settlement — a sheltered cove where local crews harvested kelp and traded from timber jetties. European settlers mapped the promontory in the 1880s, but it was the Lindqvist family who saw its potential in 1992, purchasing the derelict pier warehouse and adjacent headland acreage.
In March 1994, Erik and Helena Lindqvist opened sixteen blackjack tables in the restored warehouse — the first licensed casino venue on the Gold Coast outside Brisbane. The brief was deliberate: build nothing generic. Every stone, every timber beam, every view had to belong to this headland.
Three decades of expansion followed — the glass-and-sandstone gaming hall in 2001, ninety-six suites in 2008, the Kelp Theatre in 2015, and the Bangkelian Villa in 2022. Today, Bangkelian employs over 680 staff and welcomes more than 52,000 guests annually — all in person, all on the coast.

Bangkelian is an offline destination. Gaming, dining, events, spa and entertainment happen on-site with real people — never online, never remote. The headland is the experience.

We source from Queensland growers, hire from Gold Coast communities and contribute to local charities through quarterly gala partnerships. The headland gives back to the coast that sustains it.

The team behind the headland
Bangkelian is led by a team with deep roots in Queensland hospitality, gaming regulation and coastal development.
Amara Lindqvist
Chief Executive Officer — second-generation leader who joined in 2008 after a decade in London hospitality. Oversees resort strategy, community partnerships and the Bangkelian Foundation.
Marcus Chen
General Manager, Gaming — twenty-two years in Queensland licensed venues. Responsible for casino floor operations, Kelp Circle VIP and compliance with OLGR regulations.
Sophie Harrington
Director of Events — former hotel events director who has produced over 400 weddings and corporate functions at Bangkelian since 2016. Leads a team of fourteen event coordinators.
Thomas Reeves
Executive Chef — leads the culinary vision across Kelp, Salt & Smoke, Pacific Room and Kaiku. Trained in Melbourne and Tokyo, Thomas oversees a brigade of forty sourcing exclusively from Queensland producers.
